Columbia University has recently announced its permanent commitment to being test optional, which is exciting news for the high school class of 2024 as they navigate the college admissions process. In addition, many highly selective universities, such as The Ivy League schools, Stanford, Northwestern, and Boston University, have also declared their test optional policies for the class of 2024. While we anticipate that other prestigious institutions will follow suit, it is always advisable to verify with each individual college. The test optional movement is here to stay, and we are thrilled about its implications!
Here at The College Curators, we recommend that high school students in the class of 2024 still consider taking the ACT or SAT. However, whether or not they choose to submit their scores should depend on test availability and their personal performance. Our advice is as follows:
- Students should prioritize their mental and physical well-being over taking a test.
- If their test scores do not fall within the upper 50% range of their desired school, OR if their scores do not accurately reflect their academic performance, they have the option of not submitting them.
- It is important to remember that if they decide not to submit their test scores, other aspects of their application will carry more weight in the admissions process. Rigor of coursework, grades, and a compelling story can make a significant impact.
We are encouraged to see the increasing number of schools that have announced test optional policies not only for the class of 2024, but also beyond. Together with the institutions that have traditionally been test optional, there are now numerous test optional choices available for the high school class of 2024.
At The College Curators, we have successfully guided hundreds of students in navigating the test optional environment. Our expertise lies in helping students build a well-rounded college list and create an authentic and verifiable application.
