The animated series High School DxD is an adaptation of a popular light novel/manga series, known for its harem genre, that gained popularity before the isekai boom took off. Set in a school filled with beautiful angels and demons, High School DxD’s story is filled with supernatural elements and a different world.
So far, the series has run for four seasons, but fans haven’t heard much about Season 5 since its predecessor ended in 2018. With only about half of the light novel adapted, High School DxD still has plenty of story left to tell. Below is the content of the series, how the anime has been handled, and the timeframe fans can expect to see Season 5.
Plot & Origin of High School DxD
High School DxD follows the story of Issei Hyodo, a seemingly ordinary but extremely perverted student at Kuoh Academy. Unbeknownst to him, the formerly all-girls school is mostly dominated by angels, fallen angels, and demons, with Issei being one of the few humans around. One day, Yuma Amano asks Issei out, where she reveals herself to be a fallen angel and kills him before resurrecting him through a devil summoning card from Rias. Issei wakes up the next day in his own room, where Rias reveals that since she resurrected him, he is now a devil. This makes Issei indebted to the most beautiful girl in school, where he must fight to survive amidst different factions.
The story started as a light novel series by Ichiei Ishibumi and Miyama-Zero, accumulating over 20 volumes over its nearly decade-long run. The manga adaptation also began in 2011, lasting until 2014, and has its own spin-offs. The anime started in January 2012, continuing until Season 4 in 2018. Season 4 coincided with the conclusion of the light novel and there has been no new season for the supernatural comedy series since then.
Will There Be High School DxD Season 5?
Season 4 of High School DxD loosely adapted the Heroic Oppai Dragon arc from Volumes 7-12 of the light novel. Since then, there have been additional volumes, so there is definitely enough content for at least one more season of the anime. Despite the rich source material and continued popularity of the series, there has been no official word on a new season.
Ishibumi has hinted that High School DxD Season 5 is being considered by Passione, the studio that replaced TNK as the production studio behind its fourth season. There is also no official information on any cancellation, so there is still hope for fans who want to see the story continue. Continuing to support the manga and light novel sales is likely the best way to sustain demand for the anime and send a message to the production studio, which may have pushed back the show’s remaining episodes even further due to the impact of the global pandemic. High School DxD fans can expect Season 5 towards the end of 2022, although this is somewhat unlikely.
