When taking online courses at the University of New Orleans (UNO), you may be required to use proctoring services for quizzes, tests, or exams. UNO utilizes two different online proctoring services: Respondus and ProctorU. Let’s take a closer look at each of them.
For quizzes and exams that take place within Canvas and do not require scheduling, UNO uses Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor. Respondus is free for students and does not have any fees or costs. When accessing a quiz or exam, students will be prompted to download or open the Respondus Browser. It’s important to note that Respondus does not work on phones or Android devices, but it does work with Chromebooks in Canvas (although occasionally some cached data may need to be cleared). If you encounter any Chromebook-related issues, you can find instructions in the Respondus Knowledgebase.
- Canvas Student Respondus QuickStart Guide – Classic Quizzes (Mac users must open Respondus from the Application folder for it to run correctly)
- Canvas Student Respondus QuickStart Guide – New Quizzes
- Download Respondus Lockdown Browser here or from the prompt when you open a Respondus-proctored quiz in Canvas
If you don’t have your own laptop or your device is not compatible with Respondus (e.g. phones and Android tablets), the Earl K. Long Library offers a limited number of laptops equipped with Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor. To ensure you have access to a Respondus-enabled laptop when you need it, make a reservation at least a few days in advance. Chromebooks do not work with Respondus in Pearson’s My Lab environments, so if you have a Chromebook, plan to use a different computer for those quizzes. Library laptops can be reserved if needed.
For more detailed instructions on using Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor, you can refer to the Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor Quickstart Student Guide.
To ensure the verification of student identity in online courses, UNO has partnered with ProctorU, a nationally-recognized leader in online exam proctoring services. ProctorU provides a convenient, affordable, and secure way for students to complete exams from any location using a computer, webcam, and reliable internet connection. UNO utilizes two levels of ProctorU services:
With Live+, students can schedule and take proctored exams with a live proctor. The proctor verifies their identity, checks the technology requirements, and observes and records the exam session. This option is recommended for high-stakes exams. The pricing for Live+ is as follows:
- $8.75 for exams up to 30 minutes
- $15.00 for exams from 31 up to 60 minutes
- $19.75 for exams from 61 up to 120 minutes
- $25.00 for exams from 121 up to 180 minutes
- $30.00 for exams beyond 180 minutes
Faculty are encouraged to schedule exams three weeks in advance, while students should schedule their appointments at least 72 hours ahead to avoid additional costs. There are also options to expedite the scheduling process with additional charges (+$5.00 or +$8.75) that students can pay at their own expense. Take it Soon allows a test to be scheduled within 72 hours of the chosen start time, while Take it Now allows a test to be taken on-demand without an appointment.
Review+ (with Live Launch) is a ProctorU service where a live proctor completes the identity and technology check and launches the exam, while Artificial Intelligence (AI) monitors and records the session. The live proctor reviews the recorded exam to flag anything of interest for the faculty to follow up on. The pricing for Review+ is $10.00 per exam.
If you prefer in-person purchases, you can get time cards for ProctorU exams at the UNO Bookstore. Depending on the time of the semester, you may be able to use scholarship and book voucher funds for these purchases. For more details, you can inquire at the register or call 504-280-6373.
